Leveraging Government Grants to Transform Your Farming Operation

The cost of upgrading farms using modern technology can be significant. Fortunately, there are a number of Canadian government grants for farmers, ranchers, and producers to alleviate these financial burdens.
Technology plays a major role today in enhancing a farm’s production efficiency, yields and profits over the long-term.
In the rapidly-evolving world of agriculture, the need to modernize and upgrade farms is clear and necessary to shape the future of sustainable and efficient food production in Canada.
Additionally, governments and consumers are directing their attention towards sustainable agriculture while considering, environmental impacts.
Because Southern Irrigation regularly assists farmers in applying for grants, we decided to share the common federal and provincial agriculture grants we typically help with.
Note: government funding grants are subject to change—they may come and go, and their availability is not guaranteed.
Here are the agricultural grants we often assist our customers with:
British Columbia Grants
Alberta Grants
Saskatchewan Grants

EXTREME WEATHER PREPAREDNESS FOR AGRICULTURE PROGRAMS
These grants aim to increase farm-level climate resilience to extreme weather events such as flooding, wildfires, and extreme heat.
Funding is available under three different streams including, the Wildfire Preparedness Stream, Flooding Preparedness Stream, and Extreme Heat Preparedness Stream.
To be eligible for the program, applicants must be a primary production agriculture business, be a taxable entity, and have their main farmstead in British Columbia.
The intake is now closed for this period. To be updated on the next opening date, make sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter.

SUSTAINABLE CANADIAN AGRICULTURAL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) Programs are available for Alberta producers, farmers, ranchers, and processors.
This sustainable farming grant aims to helping Alberta’s producers and processors grow their businesses and improve productivity while combating the challenges of farming in Alberta.
There are several different grants applicants can apply for under the CAP programs including Farm Technology, On-Farm Value-added, Resilient Agricultural Landscape, and more.
There are different requirements for each application depending on the grant the applicant is applying for. For more information on these applications, visit the Sustainable CAP Programs website.
Saskatchewan

SUSTAINABLE CANADIAN AGRICULTURAL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
This partnership is a five-year investment by federal and provincial governments for Saskatchewan Agriculture. There are three program streams within the partnership which include programs for research, agri-business or industry organizations, and programs for farmers and ranchers.
Each program requires different applications, which can be found on the Sustainable CAP website.
IRRIGATION PROGRAMS
There are two irrigation programs under the Sustainable CAP grant which include the Irrigation Development Program and the Irrigation Efficiency Program.
The Irrigation Development Program supports infrastructure development to create a secure water supply to irrigable land and increase irrigation capacity by a minimum of 10 acres.
The Irrigation Efficiency Program supports improved energy and water efficiencies for producers by converting low-efficiency irrigation systems with high pressure to high-efficiency systems with low pressure.
The development application can be found here and the efficiency application can be found here.
Federal Grants (no provincial restrictions)

AGRICULTURAL CLEAN TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
As part of the Government’s strengthened climate plan, the Agricultural Clean Technology program offers grants under two streams: the Adoption Stream and the Research and Innovation Stream.
The program aims to create an environment for the development and adoption of clean energy that will positively impact a low-carbon economy and promote sustainable growth in Canada’s agri-food sector.
To be eligible, this program prioritizes:
- Green energy and energy efficiency improvements that enable better management of energy-intensive agriculture processes.
- Precision agriculture contributes to precise and reduced input use, including nutrient management technologies and systems to collect data.
- Bioeconomic solutions that use agricultural waste to generate energy or create bio-products.
For this program, each application has different requirements. Applications can be found on the Agriculture and Agri-food Canada website.
The intake is now closed for this period. To be updated on the next opening date, make sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter.
ADVANCE PAYMENTS PROGRAM
This program is a loan guarantee program which provides agricultural producers with easy access to low-cost cash advances.
Eligible applicants can receive up to $1,000,000 in total advances based on the value of the agricultural products growers produce or have in storage.
What you need as security for an advance:
- The agricultural product on which the advance is based is always required as security
- Additional security is required for advances in agricultural products that are in production or non-storable and for advances in animals or animal products. This includes the potential proceeds from an eligible business risk management program (for example, AgriInsurance, AgriStability, or Farm Income Stabilization Insurance [ASRA] in Quebec) and/or another acceptable form of security.
To find out if you’re eligible, find this program on the Government of Canada website.

Braylin Acres receives the Agricultural Clean Technology Fund
Brady Funk from Braylin Acres installed 940 acres of subsurface drip irrigation using water from Lake Diefenbaker in Saskatchewan. For Brady, this project has always been a generational legacy piece, not only for internal success but also for incredible opportunities to bless others around us who need it most. Brady received the Agricultural Clean Technology Fund, tailored for unique applicants whose main goals are to promote and highlight areas in agriculture that show efficient input reductions while seeing tangible benefits. Braylin Acres contributed to this goal with the following input reductions: nitrogen, 3-phase power, water consumption, fungicide, and overall carbon footprint.
